This colored woodblock print, called a xilogravura, depicts the colorful informal music bands so characteristic of the Northeast.they are wearing the hats of cangaceiros, and the bright colors of their clothing seems to visually depict the bright rhythms of their music.

The artist of "A Banda de Pifano" is J. Miguel Borges, son of J. Borges, one of the best known artists and writers of cordel. He maintains a studio not far from his father in the small community of Bezerros, about 70 miles from Recife, Brazil.

These block prints were originally developed as covers for the chapbooks of literatura de cordel. Gradually artists who designed covers for the small chapbooks created larger images to sell. The subjects of these prints is often humorous or imaginative.
