GADO EN EL CAMPO VERDE
This striking woodblock print, called a xilogravura, shows shows a field of cows on a green background textured with grass and plants.
The artist of "Cows on a Green Field" is J. Miguel Borges, son of J. Borges, one of the best known artists and writers of cordel. He maintains a studio not far from his father in the small community of Bezerros, about 70 miles from Recife, Brazil.
These block prints were originally developed as covers for the chapbooks of literatura de cordel. Gradually artists who designed covers for the small chapbooks created larger images to sell. The subjects of these prints is often humorous or imaginative.
